As AI Ads Surge, Movie Spots Decline in This Year’s Big Game

Super Bowl commercials have long been a snapshot of the American economy and cultural trends. In past years, we’ve seen waves of crypto ads, sports betting promotions, and travel campaigns, reflecting shifts in industries and consumer interest. This year, artificial intelligence is stepping into the spotlight.

With Super Bowl LIX airing on Fox on February 9, AI-focused commercials are expected to dominate the advertising landscape. Mark Evans, executive VP of ad sales for Fox Sports, confirms this shift:

“AI is coming. If it’s not already here in almost every business, it will be coming like a freight train.”

Major tech companies investing in AI—such as Microsoft and Google—are likely to feature AI prominently in their Super Bowl ads. But the real question is whether AI-first startups like OpenAI, Perplexity, or Anthropic will join the ranks, given the hefty price tag of a 30-second spot.

The Cost of Super Bowl Ads Hits a Record High

This year, advertisers are paying an all-time high, with some 30-second spots selling for over $8 million. Fox reportedly secured more than 10 advertisers at this rate, backed by a waiting list of brands eager to buy in. When companies like State Farm pulled out, others were ready to step in at premium rates.

What Else Will We See?

While AI will be the big theme, traditional Super Bowl ad categories remain strong. Expect a flood of beverage commercials, tech ads, salty snack promotions, and financial services spots. Pharmaceutical ads will also be more prevalent this year.

However, one category is noticeably down: movie studios and streaming services. The decline is likely a result of last year’s Hollywood strikes and shifts in the post-pandemic entertainment industry.

The Power of Live Sports Advertising

The massive investment in Super Bowl ads highlights the growing importance of live sports in an on-demand entertainment world. With consumers increasingly skipping traditional TV in favor of streaming, live events like the Super Bowl remain one of the few opportunities for advertisers to reach a massive audience at once.

As AI takes center stage in Super Bowl ads, it’s clear that the technology is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s here, and it’s plan is clear.
