Alan Ritchson has become the definitive Jack Reacher for many fans, but landing the role wasn’t as straightforward as it might seem. In a recent Wired interview, Ritchson revealed that one of the studios involved in Reacher had already promised the role to another actor—until he delivered an audition so powerful that it changed everything.
The Grueling Audition Process
“It was an eight-month audition process,” Ritchson shared. “And then I found out after the fact, they promised the job to another dude. And I just happened to be crushing the auditions, and they were like, ‘I guess we have to strongly consider this guy.’”
While Ritchson didn’t name the actor who was initially set to play Reacher, we do know some of the competition. Brandon Routh, Teddy Sears, and Brian Van Holt were all in the running. If Routh—who once played Superman—was the studio’s first choice, it would’ve made for an ironic twist, with one powerhouse character nearly going to another superhero veteran.
From Superheroes to Reacher
Before Reacher, Ritchson had a history of playing comic book characters, including Hawk in Titans and Aquaman in Smallville. He’s even expressed a strong desire to play Batman. But for now, he’s made Reacher his own—and it’s hard to argue with the results.
With Reacher already greenlit for a fourth season, Ritchson’s powerhouse performance continues to drive the show’s success. New episodes drop Thursdays on Prime Video—don’t miss them!
