Alex Garland Says "The Last Of Us" Inspired "28 Years Later" Sequel

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Alex Garland, the writer behind 28 Days Later, has openly admitted that The Last of Us had a major influence on the upcoming 28 Years Later. In a conversation with The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann on Sony’s Creator to Creator series, Garland praised the video game’s storytelling, calling it more “sophisticated and moving” than his own 2002 film.

“I know what 28 Days Later is, I know what I did,” Garland said. “But seriously, The Last of Us is on another level – so yeah, of course, I was influenced by it.”

This influence reportedly played a role in shaping 28 Years Later, which follows Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Isla (Jodie Comer), and their son Spike (Alfie Williams) as they navigate life on Holy Island, a small community cut off from the UK mainland except during low tide. When Spike embarks on a dangerous coming-of-age journey beyond the island, he’s faced with the harsh reality of the world outside.

Despite skepticism about turning 28 Days Later into a trilogy, Garland insists that the decision wasn’t motivated by profit but by a strong narrative vision. “This is very narratively ambitious. Danny [Boyle] and I understood that,” he explained. “We tried to condense it, but its natural form felt like a trilogy.”

Fans won’t have to wait long—28 Years Later hits theaters on June 20, 2025, with its sequel, The Bone Temple, set for release on January 16, 2026.
