Andrew Niccol’s "Lord Of War" Sequel With Nicolas Cage Finally Set To Begin Production

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

After years of speculation and delays, Andrew Niccol’s sequel to the 2005 film Lord of War is finally moving forward, with production planned for 2025. The original film, starring Nicolas Cage as arms dealer Yuri Orlov, offered a sharp, satirical take on the global arms trade, drawing inspiration from real-life figures like Viktor Bout. Now, the sequel, titled Lords of War, aims to expand on that narrative with a fresh story and a larger scope.

The Return of Yuri Orlov

Cage will reprise his role as the charismatic yet morally bankrupt Yuri Orlov, but the sequel introduces a new dynamic with the addition of Bill Skarsgård as Yuri’s estranged son, Anton. According to Skarsgård, the script retains the dark humor and biting cynicism that defined the first film. Anton is set to follow in his father’s footsteps—but with an even more dangerous ambition: building a mercenary army to influence America’s Middle East conflicts.

“It’s a great script,” Skarsgård revealed in a recent interview, describing the sequel as both bleak and darkly comedic. “I like when you laugh at terrible people… I think that’ll be a fun one.”

An Ambitious Production

Niccol, known for Gattaca and The Truman Show, returns as writer and director, marking his most significant project in years. The sequel will be shot across multiple countries, including Morocco, Libya, Egypt, Senegal, and Mali, suggesting a high budget and expansive narrative. For Niccol, whose recent films like Anon and In Time struggled to make an impact, Lords of War could be a much-needed return to form.

Cage's Relentless Career

Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage continues to be one of Hollywood’s busiest actors. With over 116 acting credits, he remains a versatile and prolific performer. In addition to Lords of War, Cage’s upcoming projects include David O. Russell’s Madden, the Sony Spider-Noir series, and several B-movies like The Gunslingers and The Carpenter’s Son.

A Promising Follow-Up

With Niccol back at the helm and a compelling cast, Lords of War is poised to explore new dimensions of the arms trade narrative, blending sharp satire with thrilling storytelling. Fans of the original will undoubtedly be eager to see how this sequel evolves its themes while delivering the dark, gripping drama they’ve come to expect.
