The Vince Lombardi Trophy is the most coveted prize in the NFL, awarded annually to the Super Bowl champions. But legendary coach Bill Belichick believes it might be time for a name change—one that honors the most accomplished player in the sport’s history: Tom Brady.
During a recent episode of the Let’s Go! podcast with Jim Gray, Belichick, now the head coach at UNC, made it clear that winning championships is all about the players. While coaches play a crucial role in preparation and strategy, it’s the athletes who make the difference on the field.
"You can't win games without good players. I don't care who the coach is, it's impossible," Belichick said, giving credit to the many Hall of Famers he’s coached, including Brady.
When Gray pointed out that the Lombardi Trophy is named after a coach, not a player, Belichick was quick to respond: "Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them."
Brady’s seven Super Bowl rings—the most by any player—plus his all-time records in passing yards, touchdowns, and playoff wins, make him an undeniable icon of the sport. While Lombardi won five NFL Championships and two Super Bowls, Brady's dominance in the modern era is unparalleled.
Would the NFL ever consider such a change? It's unlikely, but if any player deserves the honor, Tom Brady is certainly at the top of the list.
