Great news for Blue Bloods fans—Detective Danny Reagan is back, but this time, he’s heading to Boston. CBS has officially ordered Boston Blue (working title), a new police drama set in the Blue Bloods universe, with Donnie Wahlberg reprising his beloved role.
What to Expect from Boston Blue
The upcoming series, slated for the 2025-2026 season, follows NYPD Detective Danny Reagan as he transitions to the Boston Police Department. There, he partners with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a well-known law enforcement family. The series will explore new cases, complex family dynamics, and the signature blend of action and drama that made Blue Bloods a fan favorite.
How the Spinoff Came to Life
Initially, Boston Blue wasn’t designed as a Blue Bloods spinoff. Writers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (S.W.A.T.) originally pitched a separate police drama about a Boston law enforcement family. CBS saw the opportunity to tie the new show into the Blue Bloods universe by bringing in Wahlberg’s character instead of an LAPD transplant. Given Wahlberg’s deep roots in Boston, the transition felt natural, and the deal was sealed.
What This Means for the Blue Bloods Legacy
With Blue Bloods concluding its 14-season run in December 2024, CBS has been actively looking for ways to keep the franchise alive. Boston Blue now joins Sheriff Country, a Fire Country spinoff, as part of CBS’s expanding lineup of franchise-driven dramas. Additionally, CBS is exploring potential spin-offs for FBI, The Equalizer, and The Neighborhood.
While the core Blue Bloods series may have ended, its legacy continues with Boston Blue, bringing fans back into the world of Reagan family values—this time, with a Boston twist.
