The Buffyverse is coming back! Sources report that Hulu is close to ordering a pilot for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in final talks to reprise her role. However, Gellar will not be the lead but will instead appear in a recurring role as the series focuses on a new Slayer.
The show’s creative team includes Nora and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face), who are set to write, showrun, and executive produce. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) will direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows banner. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer alongside Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton through Sandollar Productions.
Notably absent from the project is Joss Whedon, the original Buffy creator, who has faced allegations of toxic workplace behavior from multiple cast and crew members.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, which ran from 1997 to 2003, became a cult phenomenon, credited with revolutionizing TV storytelling and showcasing a strong female lead. The show’s legacy continues to inspire fans and creators alike, making this sequel one of the most highly anticipated revivals in recent years.
With Hulu reviving several iconic series, including Futurama and Prison Break, the return of Buffy marks another major nostalgic comeback.
The big question is how James Marsters and David Boreanaz would return as Vampires Spike and Angel since they have noticeably aged 21 years since the Angel spin-off finished and Vampires are supposed to be eternally young.
