CBS Cancels "SWAT" For The Third Time, Before Ninth Season Went Into Production

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

CBS has officially canceled SWAT for the third time, confirming that the action-packed police drama will not return for a ninth season. This marks yet another twist in the show’s rollercoaster renewal history, as it was previously canceled after season six, then revived twice—most recently for an eighth season in April 2024.

Showrunner and executive producer Andrew Dettmann expressed his disappointment, calling it "heartbreaking news" while praising the cast and crew for their dedication. SWAT star Shemar Moore, who plays Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, has not yet commented on the latest cancellation.

The series, which debuted in 2017, was based on the 1975 ABC show of the same name and became a fan favorite for its high-octane action and character-driven storytelling. Colin Farrell starred in the feature film version in 2003. Executive producer Shawn Ryan also acknowledged the end of the show, thanking the fans and crew for their commitment over eight seasons.

While CBS has made last-minute reversals before, it appears this decision is final—marking the end of SWAT’s run on the network.
