Charlie Cox’s surprise cameo as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home was a highlight for Marvel fans, but even his co-stars weren’t in on the secret. In a recent interview, Cox revealed that when he arrived in Atlanta to film his scene, he texted his longtime friend Andrew Garfield, who was heavily rumored to be reprising his role as Spider-Man.
“I pretty much knew he was in the film because I read all the stuff online,” Cox shared. “I texted him: ‘If the trades are to be believed, then we are in the same movie.’ And he’s like: ‘I don’t think so, dude. I’m doing Spider-Man.’ So I was like, ‘Yeah, so am I.’ And he replied: ‘You’re not in my script.’ Well, I’m in my script!”
Despite the secrecy, the two actors decided to meet for dinner in Atlanta. However, it wasn’t until they arrived at the restaurant that they realized being seen together could spoil the movie’s biggest surprise. “We walked in, and then we both had this moment of like, ‘Oh… This is not a good look,’” Cox recalled. They ended up sitting at a table facing the wall to avoid attracting attention.
Garfield also had his own slip-ups while trying to keep his return under wraps. He once ordered DoorDash, only for the delivery driver to recognize him and tweet about it. “Now everyone thinks I’m rude. And they know I’m in Atlanta. I just blew it on multiple levels,” Garfield admitted.
Fans can catch Cox’s Daredevil in Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 4 on Disney+.
