"Cloverfield 2" Is Still In The Works Confirms Director Babak Anvari

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

After years of silence, it looks like Cloverfield 2 is still happening. First announced in 2022 with Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow) set to direct, the sequel to the 2008 found-footage monster movie seemed to have disappeared from Paramount’s radar. However, recent comments from Anvari suggest that the project is still alive.

At SXSW, during the premiere of his latest film, Hallow Road, Anvari spoke briefly with Countdown City Geeks about Cloverfield 2. While he didn’t reveal much, his excitement hinted that the movie is still in development. “So sad that I cannot [say anything], because everyone on that team, they’re very secretive. Which I understand,” he said. “But I love your excitement. And whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re gonna get something amazing.”

It has been 17 years since Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield redefined found-footage horror. The film followed a group of New Yorkers trying to survive a citywide monster attack, using shaky handheld camerawork to create an immersive experience. The movie’s success led to the loosely connected 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), though neither was a direct sequel.

If Cloverfield 2 is indeed moving forward, it could finally provide a true continuation of the original film. While plot details remain unknown, Anvari’s involvement suggests that the project is in good hands. Fans will have to wait for an official announcement, but for now, it seems like Cloverfield 2 is still on the way.
