It’s been over two decades since Marvel and DC last collaborated on a comic, but that’s about to change. According to Heidi MacDonald of The Comics Beat, both publishers have confirmed they will be releasing two intercompany crossover one-shots later this year: DC/Marvel and Marvel/DC.
A Long-Awaited Reunion
The last time these two comic book giants teamed up was for JLA/Avengers (2003-04) by Kurt Busiek and George Pérez. That marked the end of a long history of crossovers that started in 1976 with Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man. Over the years, fans saw legendary meetings like Batman and Punisher, Superman and the Fantastic Four, and even an entire DC vs. Marvel event in 1996 that had characters from both universes battling each other.
Why Did Marvel and DC Stop Working Together?
By the early 2000s, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and DC’s Publisher Dan Didio pushed back against crossovers, believing they diluted each company’s brand. Didio even stated that relying on crossovers could signal weak sales rather than creative strength. As a result, the two companies avoided new collaborations for years, despite continued fan interest.
What Changed?
DC’s new Editor-in-Chief, Marie Javins, has a history with Marvel and helped release a reprint of JLA/Avengers in 2022 in honor of George Pérez. This renewed cooperation, alongside Marvel’s willingness to revisit past collaborations, has set the stage for these upcoming crossovers.
With major movies like Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps launching this summer, this revival of intercompany crossovers is arriving at the perfect time. Fans can finally look forward to Marvel and DC’s greatest heroes sharing the page once more, and if these one-shots prove successful, this could be the start of a whole new era of crossovers between the two biggest names in comics.
