Comic Creator Rob Liefeld Cuts Ties with Marvel After "Deadpool & Wolverine" Premiere Snub

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Rob Liefeld, the creator of characters Deadpool and Cable, has announced he will no longer work with Marvel following what he describes as a series of snubs at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere.

Liefeld detailed his grievances on his Robservations Podcast and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The main catalyst for his decision was being denied access to the premiere's afterparty, a stark contrast to his past experiences with Deadpool films under 20th Century Fox. Additionally, he claims that photos taken with the film’s creative team were later deleted and that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige ignored him on the red carpet.

His discontent with Marvel, however, began before the premiere. In early 2023, he was frustrated by the company’s decision to alter Wolverine’s creator credits, a move that upset Christine Valada, widow of Wolverine co-creator Len Wein.

Later, in mid-2024, he emailed Marvel requesting a special credit in Deadpool & Wolverine and better recognition for comic book creators, citing the example of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s prominent credit in Superman (1978). He received no response but was told by his agents that Marvel executives reacted poorly to the request.

Despite these tensions, Liefeld was given standard creator credit in the film and acknowledged with an in-movie Easter egg referencing his well-known struggle with drawing feet. However, he feels that Marvel’s treatment of creators has been lacking, contrasting Feige’s approach with that of James Gunn at DC Studios, who frequently praises and includes comic creators in productions.

Although Liefeld acknowledges that Deadpool & Wolverine honored his contributions in some ways, the perceived snubs at the premiere solidified his decision to part ways with Marvel. His final Marvel work, Deadpool Team-Up No. 5, will be released soon, marking the end of an era.
