Conor McDavid & Austin Matthews Bring Back Wayne Gretzky's McDonald's Ad

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs have teamed up off the ice for McDonald’s Canada, starring in a nostalgic commercial that pays tribute to the fast-food chain's iconic 1990s campaigns. According to Andre Leal of The Hockey News, the ad, titled "Showdown," sees the two NHL stars challenging each other to complete creative trick shots both inside the rink and out.

The commercial draws inspiration from legendary campaigns featuring Hockey Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky and Mats Sundin, as well as the original "Showdown" between Basketball Hall of Famers Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. Donning McDonald’s brand colors—McDavid in red and Matthews in yellow—the players engage in a series of jaw-dropping challenges.

While they didn’t quite deflect shots off a Zamboni like their predecessors, the duo added their own flair. Matthews, for instance, hilariously fired a shot at a billboard with McDavid’s face on it, while McDavid cheekily referenced Nickelback during a backhand trick, quipping, "You know you love 'em."

But the fun doesn’t stop with the ad itself. McDonald’s is introducing limited-time menu items as part of the “Showdown” campaign. Fans can back “Team Matthews” with The Smoky Quarter Papi, a BBQ-flavored Quarter Pounder that mirrors the Maple Leafs captain’s bold game-day presence. Alternatively, “Team McDavid” fans can opt for the Big Mac-David, a double Big Mac that McDonald’s calls “bold and commanding.”

In addition to these star-inspired burgers, the campaign also features other creative menu items like The Spicy Junior Chirpy chicken sandwich, The Hat Trick triple cheeseburger, Power Play Poutine with spicy maple and bacon, and the indulgent Celly Sundae. The limited-time menu is available starting Tuesday, making it a must-try for hockey fans and foodies alike.

This collaboration cleverly combines sports, nostalgia, and creative branding, solidifying McDonald’s presence in hockey culture while celebrating two of the NHL’s brightest stars. Whether you’re team McDavid or team Matthews, one thing is for sure—McDonald’s is serving up plenty of flavor both on and off the ice.
