When The Batman (2022) began filming, Robert Pattinson was 32—young enough to portray a fresh, early-years Dark Knight. The idea was to showcase a new Batman, different from Ben Affleck’s seasoned, battle-worn version. But now, three years later, The Batman – Part II still hasn’t started production, and if filming began today, Pattinson would already be 38. By the time the sequel finally releases in 2026, he’ll be 40—hardly fitting for a “young” Caped Crusader.
Meanwhile, James Gunn is setting up a brand-new DC Universe, with The Brave and the Bold introducing a different Batman—one meant to be the definitive version moving forward.
Keeping Matt Reeves’ separate Elseworlds franchise running only complicates things and diverts attention from the core DCU Batman, who needs to be fully established for the Justice League’s eventual return.
DC has struggled for years with inconsistent storytelling, and dragging out Reeves’ Batman series only prolongs that issue. A five-year gap between movies kills momentum, especially when audiences will already be introduced to a new Batman in Gunn’s DCU. Instead of holding onto Pattinson’s version, DC needs to focus entirely on the future—and that means cutting the Reevesverse loose.
