The cancellation of the Frasier revival after just two seasons on Paramount+ left many fans wondering—would the show have fared better if it had embraced its Cheers roots?
Kelsey Grammer recently opened up about the show’s struggles, revealing that the project suffered from a lack of passion from new Paramount+ executives. However, one of the biggest criticisms from fans was the absence of familiar faces from Cheers. Despite being set in Boston, the reboot introduced a mostly new cast, leaving out key characters like Ted Danson’s Sam Malone or other bar's gang.
Now, as CBS Studios searches for a new home for Frasier, Grammer has teased the possibility of bringing back Danson. The two actors, who famously went decades without speaking, have reconciled and are discussing ways to work together again. If Frasier had included Danson from the start—or even other Cheers alumni—perhaps it could have generated stronger nostalgia appeal and retained more viewers.
While the revival focused on Frasier’s new life, his son Freddy, and fresh relationships, many longtime fans were hoping for more connections to his past. With Frasier now being shopped to new networks, there’s still a chance to correct course. If a third season happens, reintroducing Cheers characters could be the key to keeping it alive.
