George Lucas’ Canceled "Star Wars: Underworld" TV Series Would Have Transformed The Franchise

Before Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, George Lucas was working on an ambitious live-action Star Wars television series titled Star Wars: Underworld. Producer Rick McCallum recently revealed on the Young Indy Chronicles podcast that the show had over 60 scripts in development and was set to take the franchise in a darker, more mature direction.

“These were dark. They were sexy. They were violent,” McCallum said, describing the scripts as “complicated” and “challenging.” The series was set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, bridging the gap between the prequel and original trilogies. However, production costs were a major roadblock. With an estimated $40 million per episode, the show was simply too expensive for Lucasfilm at the time.

McCallum believes Underworld could have changed the course of Star Wars history. “It would’ve blown up the whole Star Wars universe, and Disney would’ve definitely never offered George to buy the franchise,” he said. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Underworld was abandoned in favor of new projects, including The Mandalorian, Andor, and the sequel trilogy.

Lucas later admitted selling his company was "very painful," as he had already started developing a new trilogy. He ultimately chose to step away, citing a desire to focus on his family. While Underworld never came to fruition, its legacy remains a fascinating "what if" in Star Wars history.
