Grant Gustin recently opened up about his initial skepticism toward The Flash’s/Supergirl musical episode, Duet, which aired during Season 3. Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Gustin admitted that his first reaction was confusion. “Going into it, I was like, ‘Why are we doing this?’” he recalled.
The 2017 episode featured an array of Arrowverse stars with musical backgrounds, including Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist and Jeremy Jordan, Arrow’s John Barrowman, and Legends of Tomorrow’s Victor Garber. Guest star Darren Criss played the villainous Music Meister, who trapped The Flash and Supergirl in a musical fantasy where singing and dancing were the only ways to escape.
Despite his initial hesitation, Gustin embraced the challenge, noting that the cast’s musical talent made the concept hard to resist. “That’s why we did it. It was, like, begging to be done,” he said. He also pointed out that The Flash’s Tom Cavanagh and Supergirl’s Chris Wood—both with Broadway experience—appeared in Duet but didn’t get a chance to sing.
Looking back, Gustin acknowledged the episode’s unique place in the Arrowverse, describing it as both a challenging and fun experience. While he hasn’t rewatched it—fearing he’d nitpick his performance—he recognizes the fan appreciation.
“People love that episode. The crossovers tended to be the hardest, most miserable experiences at times, but other times the most fun experiences. ‘Duet’ was both; it was one of the more memorable, fun episodes.”
