Director Andy Tennant is shedding light on the behind-the-scenes tensions that shaped Hitch, the beloved 2005 romantic comedy starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes. As the film marks its 20th anniversary, Tennant revealed in a new Business Insider interview that Smith almost backed out just three days before shooting began.
“We had our difficulties,” Tennant admitted, explaining that he and Smith had conflicting visions for the film. The actor reportedly brought in a draft Tennant strongly opposed, leading to heated discussions with the studio. “There was a lot of fear doing a big, expensive romantic comedy with Will. It was fraught with peril,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Hitch became a massive success, grossing $371.6 million worldwide and ranking as one of the highest-grossing films of 2005. The film followed Smith as a professional dating consultant who struggles to win over a journalist played by Mendes.
Tennant proposed a sequel but was never contacted about it. Instead, he recently learned that Smith’s production company is developing Hitch 2 without him. “Hey, that’s Hollywood,” Tennant remarked.
While Tennant holds no grudges, he confirmed that he hasn’t spoken to Smith since Hitch’s press tour ended. “That was it. I have never heard from him since.”
