"Indiana Jones 5" And The Missed Opportunity: Could Time Travel Have Saved His Son Mutt?

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the franchise introduces time travel as a central plot device, opening up tantalizing possibilities. While the film explores the wonders and dangers of altering history, one question lingers in the minds of fans: why didn’t Indiana Jones use time travel to save his son, Mutt Williams, from his tragic death in Vietnam?

Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is revealed in Dial of Destiny to have died during the Vietnam War. This loss fractures Indiana’s relationship with Marion Ravenwood and casts a shadow over his later years. While the narrative uses this tragedy to deepen Indy’s emotional journey, it’s hard not to imagine an alternate timeline where the iconic archaeologist could have used time travel to prevent Mutt’s death and restore his family.

The absence of Mutt in the latest film isn’t just a narrative decision—it also reflects real-world complications. Shia LaBeouf, once a rising star, has faced well-publicized personal struggles, including legal troubles and accusations of misconduct, which likely influenced the creative team's decision not to include him in the final installment.

Two years after the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, LaBeouf candidly admitted to the Los Angeles Times that the movie “dropped the ball” and acknowledged “there was a reason it wasn’t universally accepted.” In 2016, LaBeouf doubled down on his criticism during an interview with Variety, expressing deep dissatisfaction with his collaborations with Steven Spielberg. “I don’t like the movies that I made with Spielberg,” he stated bluntly, describing his experience as disillusioning and criticizing Spielberg’s approach to filmmaking: “He’s less a director than he is a fucking company.”

Instead of recasting or sidelining the character without explanation, the filmmakers chose to address Mutt's fate head-on, giving Indiana a poignant reason to reflect on his life choices.

While Indy’s decision not to use time travel to save Mutt aligns with his respect for history and the natural order, it raises fascinating questions about the ethics of altering personal tragedies. By keeping this loss intact, the film underscores the human costs of war and the complexities of grief. At the same time, it allows for a mature exploration of Indiana’s character as he finds ways to move forward in the face of such profound loss.

The choice not to bring Mutt back via time travel may also reflect the filmmakers' desire to honor the character’s existing arc without complicating the story with additional subplots. While some fans may feel a sense of missed opportunity, the narrative remains grounded, focusing on Indiana’s acceptance of the past and his journey toward reconciliation with his estranged wife.

Would saving Mutt have offered a satisfying closure for the character? Perhaps. But the filmmakers clearly believed that Indy’s ultimate adventure was less about rewriting history and more about making peace with it.
