Is Jonathan Kent’s Death By Tornado In "Man Of Steel" The Stupidest Scene In A Comic Book Movie?

"MAN OF STEEL" TORNADO SCENE VIDEO BELOW ARTICLE:

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel has its share of controversial moments, but few spark more debate than Jonathan Kent’s death. In the scene, Clark Kent’s adoptive father willingly allows himself to be swept away by a tornado to protect his son’s secret. But does this moment make any sense, or is it one of the dumbest scenes in comic book movie history?

First, let’s consider the logic. Jonathan’s reasoning is that Clark revealing his powers too soon could cause the world to react negatively. Fair enough. But the execution of this idea is where the scene crumbles. Clark, a nearly invulnerable Kryptonian, could have easily saved his father in an instant without anyone noticing—especially in the chaos of a tornado. Instead, Jonathan gives a solemn hand wave, effectively telling Clark, Let me die for dramatic effect.

The emotional weight Snyder was aiming for is understandable, but the way it plays out feels forced and unnatural. In contrast, previous versions of Jonathan Kent died of a heart attack, a death Clark couldn’t prevent, reinforcing the idea that even with godlike power, he can’t save everyone. That lesson is far more impactful than watching him stand idly by as his father makes a completely avoidable sacrifice.

While Man of Steel has its merits, this scene remains one of the most frustratingly illogical moments in comic book movie history. What do you think is the dumbest? The Martha scene in Batman vs Superman? Thor not going for Thanos' head? The entire Catwoman film?
