Is Josh Allen’s $330M Contract The Reason The Buffalo Bills Won’t Win a Super Bowl?

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Josh Allen just landed a record-breaking six-year, $330 million contract extension with the Buffalo Bills, including $250 million guaranteed. While this deal secures Allen in Buffalo through 2030, it raises a major concern: Will this massive contract prevent the Bills from building a true Super Bowl contender as they just cut star Linebacker Von Miller yesterday.

The Salary Cap Struggle

The NFL’s hard salary cap forces teams to make tough financial decisions. With Allen now making $55 million per year, only trailing Dak Prescott ($60M), Buffalo may struggle to keep or sign elite talent in other key positions. Super Bowl teams aren’t just built around a great quarterback—they need weapons, protection, and defense, all of which require serious financial investment.

Losing Von Miller

Buffalo has already lost a key pieces and Allen’s contract could make it even harder to build a championship roster:

  • Stefon Diggs left after the 2023 season, leaving Allen without his top weapon.

  • Von Miller and other veteran defenders were let go due to cap constraints.

  • Deshaun Watson’s $230 million guaranteed contract set a dangerous precedent for massive QB deals, putting teams like the Browns in similar financial binds.

Even Patrick Mahomes, after signing his 10-year, $450M contract, saw the Chiefs trade Tyreek Hill to stay financially flexible.

The Tom Brady Blueprint

Unlike Allen, Tom Brady consistently took less money during his Patriots and Buccaneers years, allowing New England and Tampa to build complete, championship-caliber rosters. His unselfish approach led to seven Super Bowl rings—proof that a balanced team wins, not just a superstar QB.

Is Allen Worth the Price?

With Allen commanding such a large portion of the salary cap, Buffalo will need to nail draft picks and find bargain free agents to stay competitive. If they can’t, their Super Bowl window may close before it ever fully opens.

What do you think? Will Allen’s contract cost the Bills their shot at a championship?
