Jerry O'Connell Pitches "Sliders" Reboot Starting Point: Back To The Roots

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Fans of the cult sci-fi series Sliders have something new to be excited about, as star Jerry O'Connell recently proposed an idea for a reboot that would pick up from the tone and style of the first two seasons. Speaking on social media and in interviews, O'Connell revealed his preference for returning to the show’s thoughtful, exploration-driven origins, which many fans and critics consider its golden era.

Revisiting the Classic Seasons

Originally airing in 1995, Sliders followed a group of adventurers "sliding" between alternate dimensions of Earth in hopes of finding their way back home. The early seasons, created by Tracy Tormé and Robert K. Weiss, leaned heavily on speculative storytelling reminiscent of classics like Star Trek and The Time Tunnel.

O'Connell reflected on this creative spark, saying, “If we ever reboot, that’s the direction I would go—back to the thoughtful storytelling of the first two seasons.” He emphasized how the series' original focus on social commentary and world-building gave way to more action-heavy plots in Season 3, resulting in significant cast changes and creative departures.

Creative Shifts and Cast Shakeups

Season 3 marked a turning point for Sliders, with the introduction of more CGI effects, explosions, and action-oriented narratives. This shift caused friction, leading to John Rhys-Davies’ departure, followed by Sabrina Lloyd and eventually O'Connell himself in Season 4. By the fifth and final season, only Cleavant Derricks remained from the original cast, with new characters struggling to recapture the series' earlier magic.

Reflecting on this turbulent history, O'Connell proposed that any reboot should disregard later seasons and instead serve as a direct continuation of the first two. “Technology has advanced so much since the 1990s,” he said, noting that a modern reboot could offer richer storytelling without the constraints of 1990s network television.

Cast Reunion Sparks Hope

O'Connell recently reunited with Rhys-Davies at a fan convention in Orlando, reigniting discussions of a potential revival. “We’re all on an email chain, and we’re talking,” O'Connell revealed. With fans still passionate about the series, and nostalgia-fueled reboots thriving on streaming platforms, the time may be right for a fresh start for Sliders.
