Jon M. Chu, acclaimed director of Crazy Rich Asians and the upcoming Wicked, has revealed fresh details about the much-anticipated Britney Spears biopic, based on her 2023 memoir, The Woman In Me. Speaking on the Golden Globes red carpet, Chu emphasized Spears’ significant role in shaping her story for the big screen.
“She’s going to be very involved,” Chu shared with Entertainment Tonight. “I haven’t fully started yet, but she will be deeply involved. I have ideas and an approach, but it’s very early days.”
Universal Pictures acquired the film rights to Spears’ memoir, which became a cultural phenomenon upon its release. Published by Gallery Books, the book not only topped the New York Times bestseller list but also sold over 2.5 million copies in the U.S. across formats. The audiobook, narrated by Michelle Williams with an introduction by Spears, broke records as Simon & Schuster’s fastest-selling audiobook and Spotify’s most listened-to in 2023.
Chu’s reverence for Spears is clear. In an interview with Billboard, he described himself as a long-time fan, reminiscing about her early performances. “I’ve been a fan since I was young, and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium,” he said. “I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’re developing it now, and it’s a long road ahead.”
Fan enthusiasm is already running high, with many speculating who might take on the role of Britney. Chu acknowledged fan-casting buzz, saying, “I’ve seen all the suggestions, and I take them into consideration. But we need to define the movie’s approach first to find the right fit.”
Spears’ memoir charts her meteoric rise to fame, her struggles, and her journey to reclaim her narrative, making it a powerful story of resilience and self-discovery. With her active involvement and Chu’s visionary direction, fans can look forward to a biopic that truly captures the essence of the pop icon.
