Kate Hudson Says Rom-Coms Need More Male Marvel Stars To Make A Comeback

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Kate Hudson, a beloved figure in the romantic-comedy genre, has never been overly concerned with critical reviews. Movies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Fool’s Gold, and Bride Wars may not have been critical darlings—scoring as low as 15% on Rotten Tomatoes—but they remain fan favorites.

However, critics weren’t always kind. The legendary Roger Ebert was particularly harsh, infamously writing in his How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days review that he wished he could put Hudson and co-star Matthew McConaughey in the “witness protection program” because of how bad he thought the movie was.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hudson reflected on these criticisms and how audience appreciation ultimately matters more than industry accolades. “I think the critic has changed,” she explained. “Critics might not always consider what people need from a film. Are you making movies for the critics or the people?” She emphasized that rom-coms serve a different purpose than Oscar contenders—they’re about entertainment and emotional connection rather than highbrow artistic achievement.

Hudson also highlighted the difficulty of making a successful romantic comedy, a genre that has struggled in recent years. Despite shifting to streaming platforms, the rom-com still proves its box office power—evident in the success of Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Hudson believes a major challenge is the reluctance of male A-list actors to commit to the genre, joking that more Marvel stars should take the leap.

As for a How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days sequel? Hudson remains open—if the right script comes along. Until then, she stands by her rom-com legacy, proving that some films don’t need critical acclaim to remain timeless.
