Kate Mara & Jamie Bell Reflects On Their "Fantastic Four" Joining Marvel Multiverse

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

The 2015 Fantastic Four reboot remains one of the most infamous comic book adaptations in recent memory, plagued by studio interference and a troubled production. Despite its failure, Kate Mara- who portrayed Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman and her real life husband Jamie Bell- who portrayed The Thing, recently shared their thoughts on the experience and whether they’d ever return to the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A Doomed Reboot

Mara starred alongside Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm) in what was supposed to be a fresh take on Marvel’s First Family. However, with a dismal 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a disappointing $167.9 million global box office haul, Fantastic Four was a critical and commercial failure. Director Josh Trank publicly disowned the final cut, and over the years, the cast hasn’t hesitated to express their frustrations about the film’s troubled production.

Mara’s Perspective on the Experience

Speaking with CBR at SXSW, Mara took a more diplomatic stance. "I don't have anything negative to say about it," she said. "Experience is experience, and it's cool to be in those worlds, you know?" While she acknowledges the film’s shortcomings, she still appreciates the opportunity to have played such an iconic character.

Could Mara Return as Sue Storm?

With the MCU diving deep into the multiverse, past versions of beloved characters have made surprising comebacks. When asked if Marvel Studios had reached out about reprising her role, Mara responded, "God, I really wish that we were approached."

Although the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot—starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—will introduce a new version of the team, some fans have speculated that former cast members could make cameo appearances in Avengers: Secret Wars.

However, her husband Jamie Bell, who played The Thing, humorously dismissed the idea, saying, "Maybe we can try to enter through some multiverse door. But when they see us, they quickly close the door."

For now, it seems unlikely that Mara’s Sue Storm will get a second chance, but she remains excited for the franchise’s future. "I'm just excited for my kids to watch the Fantastic Four movie that me and Jamie made," she added.

With Marvel Studios set to introduce a brand-new Fantastic Four on July 25, 2025, fans will soon get a fresh take on the iconic team—one that hopefully avoids the pitfalls of its predecessors.
