Katie Cassidy Reflects On "Arrow" Exit And Surprise Return

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Katie Cassidy recently opened up about her unexpected departure from Arrow in 2015, revealing new insights into how she found out about her character’s fate. On Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Cassidy detailed the moment she realized that her character, Laurel Lance, was likely the answer to Season 4’s lingering mystery—who was in the grave?

At the time, Cassidy was sharing a place with The Flash star Danielle Panabaker, who speculated about the upcoming plot twist. Despite Panabaker’s concerns, Cassidy wasn’t initially worried. However, when showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle scheduled a call just before New York Comic Con, she had a sinking feeling.

Texting Guggenheim directly, she asked, “I’m fired, aren’t I?” His response confirmed her fears.

Cassidy recalls feeling a mix of emotions, from anger to disappointment, and even told the executive producers, “I feel like I’ve always been given the short end of the stick.” She hung up the call and broke down in tears. Co-star Stephen Amell reached out immediately, expressing his regret that she had been chosen to leave the show.

Despite the emotional exit, Cassidy’s story took a surprising turn. Shortly after her character’s death, The Flash invited her to return as the Earth-X version of Laurel, Black Siren. Her performance was well-received, leading to an offer to rejoin Arrow as a series regular by Season 6. Looking back, Cassidy acknowledges that her character’s death served the larger narrative, pushing other characters in new directions.

While her departure was painful at the time, Cassidy ultimately returned stronger than ever—both on-screen and off.
