Matthew Lawrence recently shared on the Magical Rewind podcast that the only time he ever got in trouble on a film or TV set was due to Gabrielle Union reporting him. The incident occurred during the filming of their 1999 TV movie H-E Double Hockey Sticks, where Lawrence played a hockey player and Union was his co-star.
According to Lawrence, Union asked him to rehearse lines together, but he declined, preferring to keep the scene feeling fresh. "I was like, ‘No, I’m good,’” he recalled, adding that Union then reported him to the director and studio. “She got angry and went and reported me. The only time in my entire career I was called into the office for something I did on set.”
At the time, Lawrence believed rehearsing multiple times could take the spontaneity out of a scene. However, he admitted that his approach has since changed. “Now I can do whatever, and nothing’s gonna faze me,” he said, noting his evolution as an actor.
Union, who was rising to stardom in 1999 with roles in 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That, left a lasting impression on the cast. “She’s so beautiful and she just has this aura of confidence,” podcast co-host Sabrina Bryan added.
Variety has reached out to Union’s representatives for comment, but no response has been reported yet.
