Mel Gibson Confirms “Passion Of The Christ” Sequel For 2026

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

The long-awaited sequel to Mel Gibson’s 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ is officially moving forward. Titled The Resurrection of Christ, Gibson revealed the update during his recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast while promoting his latest action thriller, Flight Risk.

Gibson disclosed that filming for the sequel is now slated to begin in 2026. Although he remains cautious about the timeline, he expressed optimism about finally moving the project forward after years of delays. “It’s taking its own time,” Gibson said. “I thought it was late. It’s taking too long. But it’s probably just right. It’s when it’s supposed to be.”

Caviezel to Return as Jesus

Jim Caviezel will reprise his iconic role as Jesus, a casting decision fans have been eagerly anticipating. Gibson also hinted that the narrative of The Resurrection of Christ will venture into uncharted territory, describing it as more mystical and surreal compared to the original film. “Jesus goes into other realms,” he said, suggesting a more profound exploration of spiritual themes.

Behind the Scenes

The screenplay has undergone multiple iterations over the years, with Gibson and collaborator Randall Wallace settling on a final draft last year. This version reportedly combines the strongest elements from previous drafts, promising a compelling and imaginative continuation of the story.

While no specific production start date has been confirmed, Gibson indicated that pre-production is on the horizon, signaling progress on a film that has faced significant delays.

With its ambitious themes and a deeply committed team, The Resurrection of Christ could redefine faith-based filmmaking, just as its predecessor did over two decades ago.
