In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibbered, director Michael Bay teased the possibility of revisiting one of his most iconic '90s films—without revealing which one. When asked whether he had any desire to return to The Rock or Armageddon, Bay responded cryptically:
"Potentially. There’s a [project] called Black Five. It’s an original idea that I came up with when I was doing Armageddon [after talking to a] physics person from NASA. That’s something I would love to do."
While Black Five is an original concept, its origins in Bay’s Armageddon era—and its focus on elite military teams and advanced technology—suggest it could share DNA with either of his past blockbusters.
Given The Rock’s military-focused action and Armageddon’s NASA connections, fans are left speculating whether Bay’s next explosive project might secretly serve as a spiritual successor to one of them. Bay also emphasized his love for experimentation, mentioning his recent foray into documentaries with the Parkour film We Are Storror:
"As a director, I like to just do fun things to keep me interested, and I love shooting. That’s why I wanted to try the documentary experiment. I liked using different muscles."
So, is Black Five a long-awaited sequel—or just another Michael Bay spectacle? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: whatever it is, it’ll be big, loud, and full of action. My prediction is it will be the long awaited crossover with Ben Affleck's AJ and Nicolas Cage's Stanley Goodspeed saving the world.
