"ARMAGEDDON" SCENE VIDEO BELOW ARTICLE:
Director Michael Bay recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd to reflect on Armageddon, including the tearjerking farewell scene between Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis. The emotional weight of the moment—when Affleck’s character, A.J., says goodbye to his surrogate father figure, Harry (Willis), before Harry sacrifices himself—has become legendary for making even the toughest viewers tear up.
When asked whether the actors ever questioned if the scene was too over-the-top, Bay revealed a behind-the-scenes challenge that made it even more intense: Ben Affleck was battling the stomach flu during filming.
“There was a three-gallon painting bucket next to Ben Affleck,” Bay recalled. “He felt like shit. He looked like shit, too. And he had to do that scene between him throwing up. We kept shooting him. And he’s great in that. And he’s great in that partially because he had the stomach flu.”
The irony of Affleck’s real-life discomfort adding to the authenticity of the scene only deepens its impact. The moment, now iconic, stands out in a film known for its high-octane action and tough-guy bravado, proving that even in a Michael Bay blockbuster, raw human emotion can take center stage.
But for me the two biggest emotional scenes in the film is during the President's Speech montage when the son sees his father the salesman on TV and after the nuclear detonation while everyone is celebrating Liv Tyler hugs Billy Bob Thornton after losing her father.
