Nathan Fillion on Playing Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s DC Universe: "He's a Jerk!"
Nathan Fillion is stepping into the role of Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, starting with the upcoming Superman reboot. Known for his charm and humor, Fillion is taking on a very different kind of character this time—one who’s not exactly heroic in the traditional sense.
"He's a jerk!" Fillion says bluntly when asked what sets his version of Guy Gardner apart. Unlike other Green Lanterns, who often embody bravery and righteousness, Gardner leans hard into just one of those traits: fearlessness. "You don't have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless," Fillion explains. "So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good."
Playing such an unapologetically selfish character is a refreshing challenge for Fillion. "He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, 'What is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment?' And that's the answer."
One of Gardner’s defining traits? His overconfidence. Fillion laughs, "He thinks he could take on Superman. He can't!" That blend of arrogance, bravado, and comedic failure could make Gardner one of the most memorable characters in this new DC Universe.
With James Gunn at the helm, Superman is already shaping up to be an exciting fresh start for DC, and Fillion’s take on Guy Gardner promises to bring a bold—and hilariously flawed—energy to the franchise.
