NBA commissioner Adam Silver has stirred up debate by expressing support for reducing game time from 48 minutes to 40. Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Silver noted that the NBA is the only major basketball league still using 12-minute quarters. He believes a two-hour game format would align better with modern television habits, similar to international and college basketball.
Currently, NBA games average around 2 hours and 16 minutes, nearly unchanged for 15 years. A shift to 10-minute quarters could have a major impact—records might become unbreakable, star players could play entire games more often, and role players might see their importance (and salaries) decline.
Not everyone is on board. Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau and Nuggets coach Michael Malone voiced their opposition, emphasizing the historical integrity of the game. Malone warned against turning the league into a spectacle, saying, "I hope we don't become Barnum & Bailey… There's a greatness and a history to this game that I hope we can stay true to."
While the discussion is still theoretical, Silver’s comments suggest the NBA is open to experimenting with game structure to engage fans in an evolving media landscape.
