Robert Pattinson's "Batman": A Step Closer To Joining "Superman" In The DCU?

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

The debate over whether Robert Pattinson's iteration of Batman will join the DC Universe (DCU) has gained traction following recent comments by Matt Reeves, director of The Batman and its forthcoming sequel. Longtime speculation, fueled by industry insiders like Jeff Sneider, has suggested Pattinson’s inclusion in the DCU is inevitable, despite initial denials by James Gunn, the DC Studios co-CEO.

On The Hot Mic podcast, Sneider reiterated that Gunn is keen to incorporate Pattinson into the DCU, but Reeves has remained cautious. According to Reeves, the move would only happen if it "makes sense" within the overarching narrative of both his Batman films and the DCU's evolving storyline.

“It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense,” Reeves stated in an interview with Josh Horowitz. "What the future brings, I can't really tell you... we'll have to see where that goes."

This measured openness marks a significant shift from previous outright denials and suggests behind-the-scenes discussions are evolving. The potential crossover raises questions about actor Robert Pattinson's willingness to commit to the long-term demands of a shared cinematic universe, given his preference for working on independent, director-driven projects. His upcoming slate includes collaborations with renowned filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan and Bong Joon-ho, underlining his focus on challenging, auteur-led cinema.

Industry observers speculate that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav may push hard to secure Pattinson's involvement, recognizing the financial and fan-driven potential of merging Reeves’ gritty Gotham with Gunn’s ambitious DCU vision. However, the integration of Pattinson’s dark, grounded Batman into a universe that will also feature a new iteration of the Caped Crusader in The Brave and the Bold adds a layer of complexity.

While fans are divided, the idea of Pattinson’s Batman stepping into the broader DCU signals a fascinating evolution for both the character and the franchise. Whether or not it materializes, one thing is clear: the door to Gotham is now ajar.
