The highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is moving along quicker than expected, according to Sarah Michelle Gellar. The actress, 47, who portrayed the iconic Buffy Summers, recently revealed in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE that the project is progressing at an impressive pace.

“We've set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I’d anticipated,” Gellar shared. However, she emphasized the need for patience, ensuring that the reboot is done right.

Announced last month, the new Buffy project is set to introduce a fresh slayer to the beloved Buffyverse, with Gellar taking on a recurring role. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is set to direct and executive produce the pilot, while sisters Nora and Lila Zuckerman will lead as showrunners. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer alongside original series EPs Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui. Legendary musician and original Buffy producer Dolly Parton is also returning through her company, Sandollar Entertainment.

Gellar expressed her excitement about working with such an impressive team, saying, “I pinch myself every day when I get into these rooms... There was no world where I thought Chloé Zhao was going to call me and partner with me.”

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, leaving a lasting impact on pop culture. Its legacy continues as new audiences discover the show, something Gellar cherishes deeply. “The fact that this show is still so impactful… and still speaks to people today—being able to bring more people to her is the greatest gift an actor could ever ask for,” she said.

With filming expected to begin soon, fans are eagerly awaiting this next chapter in Buffy’s story. The original series is currently available to stream on Hulu.
