Scarlett Johansson Slams AI Video Of Celebrities Blasting Kanye West

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Scarlett Johansson has publicly condemned the misuse of AI in a viral video featuring deepfake versions of celebrities—including herself—protesting Kanye West’s recent antisemitic comments.

The AI-generated video, which includes figures like Jack Black, Mila Kunis, and Steven Spielberg, depicts them wearing shirts with a Star of David inside a hand making an obscene gesture, with "Kanye" written underneath. The video ends with bold messages: “Enough is Enough” and “Join the Fight Against Antisemitism.”

While Johansson is outspoken against antisemitism, she strongly criticized the use of AI to create unauthorized likenesses. In a statement, she warned about AI’s growing risks, saying:

“I am a Jewish woman who has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind. But I also firmly believe that the potential for hate speech multiplied by AI is a far greater threat than any one person who takes accountability for it. We must call out the misuse of AI, no matter its messaging, or we risk losing a hold on reality.”

Johansson, who has previously taken legal action against AI recreations of her likeness, stressed that AI is a global issue, pointing out that while some countries have enacted regulations, the U.S. government remains stalled on meaningful AI legislation.

Her fight against AI misuse gained attention in 2023 when she sued an AI app for unauthorized use of her image in an advertisement. More recently, she confronted OpenAI for using a voice eerily similar to hers for its GPT-4o chatbot, despite her rejecting their initial request.

Johansson’s concerns highlight the urgent need for legal protections against AI exploitation, an issue that extends beyond celebrities to the general public. As AI technology evolves, ethical considerations and regulatory measures remain crucial in safeguarding individuals' rights.
