Scrapped Scripts And New Beginnings: The Evolution Of “Avengers: Doomsday”

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

If your like me the thought of the next Avengers film focusing on Kang felt anticlimatic after the fan spectacle of Endgame. It hit all the right notes fans wanted to see except for Hulk getting his revenge on Thanos from losing an earlier altercation.

Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, the fifth installment in the Avengers franchise, set to begin filming early this year. Directed by the Russo Brothers, the film has gone through a massive creative overhaul on its journey to the big screen.

Alongside Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for next year, these projects are poised to close out the Multiverse Saga in grand style. But how did Avengers: Doomsday come to be, and what happened to the scripts that preceded it?

From “The Kang Dynasty” to “Doomsday”

Initially, the fifth Avengers film was set to be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The story, written by Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), would have prominently featured Kang the Conqueror as the saga’s overarching villain. However, as Marvel shifted away from Jonathan Majors’ Kang, the original plans for the Multiverse Saga were scrapped.

The transition wasn’t seamless. Loveness was removed from the project, and Michael Waldron (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), who was initially tasked with writing Avengers: Secret Wars, took over to rework the script.

Enter the Russo Brothers, a fan-favorite directing duo who had previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Alongside them came Stephen McFeely, their longtime collaborator, who reshaped the project into what we now know as Avengers: Doomsday.

A Clean Slate: No Room for Old Ideas

According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, every idea from Waldron and Loveness’s earlier drafts has been completely discarded. The Russos and McFeely opted to start from scratch, rebuilding the narrative to better align with their vision. This overhaul caused brief speculation about production delays, but the team appears to be on track for filming this spring.

One notable change is the introduction of Doctor Doom, now played by Robert Downey Jr. in a surprising return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Doom will serve as the primary antagonist of Avengers: Doomsday, with no lingering traces of Kang’s storyline. This revelation dismisses the rumor that Doom was simply substituted into Kang’s role in the original script.

Daredevil’s Brief Return

Another exciting tidbit from the updated project is the confirmation of Charlie Cox’s appearance as Daredevil. While his role is expected to be a minor one, this cameo will surely delight fans eager to see more of the beloved character in the MCU.

What’s Next?

With Avengers: Doomsday set to release in May 2026, Marvel’s decision to overhaul the narrative signals a bold new direction for the franchise. Fans can expect a fresh take on the Multiverse Saga’s climactic chapters, led by the creative vision of the Russos and McFeely. If history is any indication, Marvel's gamble on a clean slate may well pay off.
