As excitement builds for Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman, fans are abuzz with speculation about which villain will take center stage. With no official word from Reeves, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, or others, rumors abound.
Villain Possibilities: Who’s In, Who’s Out?
Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, will return, but his role is expected to remain secondary, as it was in the first film. Barry Keoghan’s Joker is also unlikely to headline, despite his brief appearance in The Batman. Meanwhile, speculation about Clayface has cooled following reports that the character might be featured in his own standalone film.
The latest rumor, courtesy of Jeff Sneider from The Hot Mic, suggests Mr. Freeze may step into the villainous spotlight. While Sneider emphasizes this is unconfirmed, the possibility has intrigued fans, especially since Reeves has revealed that the sequel is set in winter—a fitting backdrop for the icy antagonist.
Can Mr. Freeze Work in Reeves’ Grounded Gotham?
Reeves’ take on Gotham leans heavily into gritty realism, making the inclusion of a villain like Mr. Freeze, who traditionally dons a high-tech cold suit and wields a freeze gun, a potentially difficult fit. However, the character’s depth and tragic backstory, particularly as reimagined in Batman: The Animated Series episode “Heart of Ice,” could provide the emotional complexity Reeves is known to favor.
It’s worth noting that Mr. Freeze’s live-action history hasn’t been kind. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s over-the-top portrayal in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin left the character’s reputation on thin ice. Still, a modernized, nuanced take could rehabilitate the villain’s cinematic image.
Patience Required
Fans eagerly awaiting the sequel will need to stay patient. Reeves is meticulously crafting the script, with filming slated for late 2025 and a theatrical release planned for October 2027. Until official announcements are made, speculation about the villain will remain a hot topic.
