"The Accountant 2" Sets Up A Trilogy, Says Director Gavin O’Connor

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Fans of The Accountant have more to look forward to than just a single sequel—director Gavin O’Connor has confirmed that the upcoming The Accountant 2 is actually the middle chapter of a planned trilogy.

Speaking at SXSW, O’Connor revealed that he and screenwriter Bill Dubuque have been developing a three-film arc since finishing the first movie in 2016. Ben Affleck, who stars as Christian Wolff, a highly skilled but socially isolated forensic accountant, has already been pitched on the trilogy concept.

O’Connor explained in an interview with Collider that the idea for three films has been in place since post-production on the first movie. He and Dubuque mapped out the storyline together, exploring how the character’s journey could evolve over multiple installments. However, he emphasized that the franchise’s future hinges on the success of the second film—both at the box office and with audiences.

Affleck himself echoed this sentiment, stating that The Accountant 2 will need to “earn” a third film through its reception. The sequel will see Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s character, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina, bringing Christian and his lethal brother Brax (Jon Bernthal) out of hiding after someone close to them is assassinated.

With its mix of intense action, deep character development, and high-stakes storytelling, The Accountant 2 looks set to deliver another thrilling ride when it hits theaters on April 25.
