In The Lost Boys (1987), Nanook (Cody), Sam’s loyal Alaskan Malamute, is more than just a pet—he’s a true vampire hunter. Meanwhile, Thorn (Folsom), the intimidating White Dog guarding Max, plays the role of a protector for the head vampire that we never do find out is a Hellhound or a regular dog.
Given their opposing allegiances, one might expect a dramatic showdown between these two dogs, a classic battle of good versus evil. However, despite their symbolic roles, they never actually fight.
Instead, Nanook proves his heroism in other ways. He first defends Sam from Michael, stopping the vampire from attacking him in the bathtub. Later, in one of the most memorable moments of the film, Nanook saves the Frog Brothers during the chaotic battle in the vampire lair. Just as they are about to be overpowered, Nanook leaps onto Paul, sending him crashing into a bathtub filled with holy water, ultimately killing him.
His instincts and bravery make him just as much a vampire slayer as the human protagonists.
This lack of direct confrontation between Nanook and Thorn is a deliberate choice that subverts expectations.
Unlike I Am Legend (2007), where Robert Neville’s dog, Sam, fights infected zombie dogs in a brutal struggle, The Lost Boys keeps its canine conflict in the background which maybe is for the best unless Thorn turned into a Vampire to make a dog fight less brutal by being comically unrealistic.
