After delivering some of the most iconic films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame), Joe and Anthony Russo seemingly closed the chapter on their Marvel journey. But in a surprising twist, the directing duo is making their highly-anticipated return to helm one of the MCU’s most ambitious projects yet: Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release in 2027.
From "Endgame Was the End" to a New Beginning
For the Russos, Endgame was meant to be their farewell to the MCU. “Endgame was the end,” Anthony Russo recently shared in an interview. After crafting the emotionally charged finale of the Infinity Saga, the brothers felt their time with Marvel had reached a natural conclusion. But their close relationship with Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige and Co-President Louis D’Esposito kept the door slightly ajar.
“We’re very close with Kevin and Lou,” Anthony explained. “And we’ve had conversations through the years, but we never found the right story—until now.” That story, it turns out, was Secret Wars.
The Idea That Brought the Russos Back
Adapting Secret Wars—a legendary comic arc involving multiverse-spanning battles and massive character crossovers—wasn't always the plan. Joe Russo recalled the moment it all clicked: “I remember calling Stephen McFeely [screenwriter of Endgame] and saying, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’”
McFeely’s initial reaction? A hard no. But less than a day later, he had a change of heart. “By 7:30 the next morning, Stephen called back and said, ‘Alright, I have an idea.’” That spark of inspiration led to a story so compelling that it brought the Russos back into Marvel’s fold, reuniting them with McFeely and even bringing in Robert Downey Jr. in an unexpected role as Dr. Doom.
Why Secret Wars Is a Perfect Russo Brothers Project
The Russos have always excelled at balancing massive ensembles and delivering emotionally resonant stories. With Secret Wars, they’re taking on the challenge of bringing multiple universes together in a way that feels coherent and thrilling. It’s an opportunity to combine everything they’ve learned from their previous Marvel projects while exploring new creative frontiers.
“It’s a story we couldn’t see coming, but once it arrived, it was something we knew we had to tell,” Anthony teased. Given their track record, fans can expect a cinematic event that will rival the scale and stakes of Infinity War and Endgame.
Marvel’s Creative Avengers Are Assembling
While the Russos are at the helm, Secret Wars is also reuniting them with one-half of their Endgame screenwriting team, Stephen McFeely. Though his writing partner Christopher Markus is sitting this one out to focus on projects at AGBO, the Russos’ production company, the creative energy behind the MCU’s biggest hits is alive and well.
With their return, the Russo brothers aren’t just directing another Marvel movie—they’re shaping the future of the MCU. For fans, the promise of their visionary storytelling paired with the jaw-dropping potential of Secret Wars makes this a reunion worth waiting for.
