"The Vampire Diaries": Paul Wesley Thinks Stefan & Caroline Romance Never Should Have Happened

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Even actors have opinions about their characters' love lives, and Paul Wesley just revealed which Vampire Diaries storyline he thinks should have never made it past the writers’ room.

During his appearance on Hot Ones Versus with former co-star and Brothers Bond Bourbon business partner Ian Somerhalder, Wesley was put on the spot. Somerhalder asked him to name “one storyline you think should’ve never made it out of the writers' room.” Wesley’s answer? The romantic relationship between his character, Stefan Salvatore, and Candice King’s Caroline Forbes—better known to fans as Steroline.

After Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) left the show at the end of season six, the writers paired Stefan with Caroline, a development that ultimately led to their wedding in season eight—right before Stefan’s tragic death. Wesley admitted the storyline felt “a little forced,” though Somerhalder chimed in to call it “cute.”

While Steroline had its dedicated fanbase, many viewers were more invested in Caroline’s chemistry with Klaus Mikaelson (Klaroline), played by Joseph Morgan. Even Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec acknowledged how Klaus and Caroline’s dynamic almost disrupted the long-term plan to bring Stefan and Caroline together.

This revelation from Wesley has reignited fan debates about Steroline vs. Klaroline, proving that even years after its finale, The Vampire Diaries still has the power to spark passionate discussions.
