Vince McMahon's Vision: The Foundation Of WWE's Netflix Deal

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Vince McMahon has long been a polarizing figure in professional wrestling. While his leadership has sparked controversy, even his fans and critics can’t deny the visionary moves that helped shape WWE’s dominance. WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff recently emphasized this point on his 83 Weeks podcast, highlighting McMahon’s role in laying the groundwork for WWE’s groundbreaking deal with Netflix.

In January 2024, WWE announced its historic partnership with Netflix, signaling a new era for the company's content distribution. Days after the announcement, McMahon resigned from WWE and its parent company, TKO, amidst legal allegations and an ongoing investigation. Despite these controversies, Bischoff was quick to credit McMahon’s bold vision for the company’s streaming success.

“Vince McMahon, you can criticize Vince, there’s a lot to criticize,” Bischoff stated. “But you cannot criticize his vision and his focus on achieving things from that vision. And the [streaming], to abandoning pay-per-view, which represented probably a minimum of 25 percent of their net revenues, abandoning that format and taking a new approach with [streaming] is what set WWE up for the Netflix opportunity they’ve received now.”

This decision to pivot from traditional pay-per-view (PPV) to streaming content on platforms like the WWE Network was initially met with skepticism. However, McMahon's strategy of embracing digital distribution proved to be ahead of its time. By creating a direct-to-consumer platform, WWE not only retained its loyal fanbase but also attracted new viewers, particularly from younger, tech-savvy demographics.

The move to Netflix further solidifies WWE's place in mainstream entertainment, opening doors for its vast library of content and live programming to reach millions of global subscribers. While McMahon’s tenure ended under a cloud of controversy, Bischoff’s comments remind us that his legacy includes transformative decisions that forever changed the way wrestling—and entertainment—connects with audiences.

One thing is certain, Bischoff and McMahon both saved Pro Wrestling with the Attitude Era. The formation of NWO on WCW and DX on WWE leaded to superstars Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Goldberg.
