The possibility of a One Tree Hill revival has sparked excitement among fans, with Hilarie Burton and Sophia Bush leading the charge to bring Tree Hill back, possibly on Netflix. However, it seems the revival might face some challenges in reuniting the full original cast.
James Lafferty, who played Nathan Scott, has hinted that his focus lies with his comedy series Everyone Is Doing Great, which he co-created with OTH alum Stephen Colletti. Meanwhile, Chad Michael Murray who played his half brother Lucas Scott has left the door open but remained noncommittal about his potential involvement.
Speaking to Variety, Murray addressed the topic of a revival, saying: “You cross that bridge when you come to it. There’s just no way that I can tell the future, and there’s been no conversations. But the fan base is infectious, and if this show does come to fruition, I’m so excited for them to be able to go through this journey—whatever that journey may be.”
While it’s heartening to hear Murray acknowledge the passion of One Tree Hill fans, his comments suggest uncertainty about his availability. This complicates the idea of a revival, as Lucas and Nathan were the emotional foundation of the series. Their brotherhood provided much of the heart and tension that made the show so memorable. Lucas was the show’s introspective, moral compass, while Nathan’s redemption story kept fans invested over the years. Without both Scott brothers, a revival risks feeling incomplete.
James Lafferty’s statement about his current priorities also hints that his participation might not be likely, at least in the near future. "Personally, I'm blown away by the fans that make a conversation like this even possible," he said. "Professionally, I'm completely focused on finding Everyone Is Doing Great season two the right home. Until then, consider me grateful for this moment and cheering everyone on!"
Even so, Hilarie Burton and Sophia Bush have expressed enthusiasm for a revival, imagining a story that focuses on Peyton and Brooke navigating adulthood as mothers and businesswomen. Their passion and Netflix’s ability to successfully revive nostalgic series (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, for example) make this idea compelling. However, bringing back at least some involvement from Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty would elevate the revival, ensuring it honors the show’s legacy while embracing fresh narratives.
The question remains: Can a One Tree Hill revival truly capture the magic without Lucas and Nathan Scott? Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely, hoping the journey back to Tree Hill includes all the characters they’ve loved for so long.
