Will The TikTok Ban Reversal Impact DJI's Potential Ban?

Writer: Dan LalondeDan Lalonde

Last weekend, the Supreme Court upheld a groundbreaking law banning TikTok in the United States, setting the stage for the app’s shutdown. Yet, both former President Biden and newly inaugurated President Trump appear reluctant to enforce it. This raises an intriguing question: could similar executive hesitation offer DJI a lifeline?

A Tale of Two Bans

While TikTok faces a forced divestiture from its Chinese parent company ByteDance, DJI—a wholly Chinese-owned drone maker—is staring down a looming ban unless a security assessment is conducted by the end of fiscal year 2025. With its rival Autel in a similar predicament, the stakes are high for the drone industry.

The key difference? TikTok’s vast influence as a social media juggernaut with 170 million users has fueled grassroots protests and political pressure. In contrast, DJI lacks this level of public and political clout, despite the critical role its drones play in fields like videography, public safety, and infrastructure mapping.

Political Realities

TikTok’s survival hinges on its perceived political value. Platforms like TikTok have become essential tools in election strategies, and their influence has reshaped modern campaigning. By contrast, supporting DJI or Autel provides no such political advantage. The limited user base of professional drone pilots lacks the numbers or sway to significantly influence policy decisions.

What Lies Ahead

President Trump’s decision to delay enforcing the TikTok ban showcases the murky legal waters of executive inaction. However, it remains uncertain whether the same tactic could delay a DJI ban, especially given the national security concerns surrounding Chinese-owned tech.

Ultimately, DJI’s best hope lies in Congress approving a security assessment for Chinese drones. Even if successful, it’s unclear whether future legislation, such as the Countering CCP Drone Act, could reignite the issue.

For now, DJI must navigate a complex political and regulatory landscape, with time as its greatest adversary.
