Would "Magazine Dreams" Be an Oscar Contender If Jonathan Majors Weren’t Convicted Of Assault?

"MAGAZINE DREAMS" TRAILER VIDEO BELOW ARTICLE:

Jonathan Majors’ gripping performance in Magazine Dreams was once considered a surefire contender for the 2024 Oscars. After the film’s Sundance debut, critics praised his transformative role as an aspiring bodybuilder consumed by obsession and isolation.

Some even compared his work to past Best Actor winners like Joaquin Phoenix in Joker or Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. However, Majors' assault conviction in December 2023 led to the film being pulled from Searchlight Pictures’ release slate, effectively ending its awards campaign.

If Majors hadn’t been convicted, Magazine Dreams likely would have remained in the Oscar conversation. The Academy has recognized dark, character-driven performances before, and Majors' dedication to the physically and emotionally demanding role might have earned him a nomination. Additionally, the film’s themes of loneliness and ambition resonate with past Oscar-favorite narratives.

However, even without the legal issues, Magazine Dreams may have faced challenges. Some critics noted its intense, unsettling tone and slow pacing, which might not have appealed to all Academy voters. While Majors' performance was praised, the film itself received mixed reviews, meaning its overall awards potential could have been limited.

Ultimately, Majors’ legal troubles made the question of Oscar chances irrelevant, as the film remains unreleased. But in an alternate scenario, his performance could have at least put Magazine Dreams in the awards race—though whether it would have won is another debate entirely. The film is now scheduled for release on March 21, 2025, though its awards prospects remain uncertain.
